I find the guy a bit grating, but I do support his points on right to repair. Youtube to continue the enshitification of all things.

Louis will be fine, he’s scrappy. Bit of a whiner though.

100% agreed. I can’t stand his videos. I like his points, and I like his board repair. But when he goes on a rant, he gets really obsessive, he’s not wrong, he just keeps hammering the point over and over again.

If you enjoy being outraged, his videos are perfection

if you start competing with youtube and their money stream… youtube might uninvite you from their platform.

I just downloaded his grayjay app to check it out. It’s pretty awesome. You’re supposed to buy it for $10 and there’s a purchase option, but I don’t know when it actually cuts you off and wants you to pay. Be worth it to me just for youtube being add free and letting you see and read all the comments and replies.

IIRC from his introduction video he says it’s unlimited free trial. The source code is released so you can even just remove that code if you wanted to.

The $10 is to support the developers because you’re the customer, not the product.

Depends what you mean by better? New pipe is fully open source, anybody can fork it and use it. So new pipe is free and open source software, so it contributes to the open source community.

The proprietary application is source available, but the license is such that nobody can use it to build other projects.

However, the proprietary application has support for more platforms built in. So it depends on what you want out of your experience and the future of open source software

Also worth pointing out why the code is released but the license is more restricted - the aim is to prevent scammers from grabbing FOSS, putting ads in it, and putting it in the app store, while at the same time allowing for folks to “own” the code they buy (or use).

I agree with your post except the own the code you buy.

It’s also worth noting they could get the same legal protections about things going into the app store, by trademarking the name. They don’t need to have a restrictive license around the source. People could upload codes to the app store but they couldn’t give it the same name.

The license is revocable, they could just decide tomorrow and nobody’s allowed to run the code. Yes you could technically still run the code, and that’s a net positive, but you couldn’t legally do it.

And given what we know about security vulnerabilities and software, if people aren’t allowed to patch the code for software vulnerabilities, then it becomes a bigger and bigger risk over time. And you’re definitely not allowed to distribute patches.

Yes. I’ve been using newpipe, but it’s been years and you can’t see people replying to comments. In grayjay you can, and it has the bonus of all the other sites you can add that aren’t youtube.

It also supports other platforms. I haven’t been able to watch Nebula on my degoogled phone because of GPS missing - now I can
