    Meh. Dude didn’t bother setting up find my Mac/activation lock, so when it was stolen it got reformatted and someone DID set up activation lock.

    Somehow he got it back anyway, but was then locked out and had to prove current ownership.

    Shit like this is often two exes battling over computer ownership, so I’m not surprised he had a difficult time proving ownership, even with receipts.

      Yep exactly this is what I was thinking the whole time. If you don’t set up activation lock, you’re taking a huge risk. I do agree that maybe they should be more insistent that you set it up (especially since it’s less obvious why you need to with a Mac vs an iPhone).

    I hate the idea of any device that can be bricked/locked out via software, especially when that lockout is controlled by a 3rd party.
