octopus_ink@slrpnk.netto TenForward: Where Every Vulcan Knows Your Name@lemmy.world•I don't understand some peopleEnglish54·15 hours agoI feel pretty much the same about anyone who complains about something being “woke”, no matter the topic - if perceiving and objecting to harms against and struggles of others not like yourself offends you, if seeing others actively try to work in support of those others is something you just can’t stomach, then you aren’t someone whose opinion I care about.
Plus the folks making those complaints can rarely define what woke is, or struggle to without using language that will immediately “out” their actual objections.
octopus_ink@slrpnk.netto politics @lemmy.world•'Trump says 'big bill' should only help GOP states: 'Don't want to benefit Dem governors'English21·1 day agoI realize I’m making some optimistic assumptions about the durability of our election apparatus, but if we can’t get a shift in power at the midterms I suspect the fascist in chief will accelerate his rate of attacks on freedoms and it won’t be long after that. I predict we make it no later than slightly past the midterms before hitting that point unless there’s a big shift on the congressional side of things.
Not so much because I think people will take to the streets with that in mind, by the way, but because tensions will be so high that somebody somewhere is going to make just the wrong mistake, some people are going to die or get badly hurt, and it’s going to set things off from there.

octopus_ink@slrpnk.netOPtoMicroblog Memes@lemmy.world•Chicago Sun-Times caught publishing likely ChatGPT generated list of Summer Reading recommendations. 10 of 15 books don't exist.English2·1 day agoI don’t disagree! But my point was that it will inherently present challenges to interacting with it objectively and fully rationally, IMO.
octopus_ink@slrpnk.netOPtoMicroblog Memes@lemmy.world•Chicago Sun-Times caught publishing likely ChatGPT generated list of Summer Reading recommendations. 10 of 15 books don't exist.English9·1 day agoTo be fair, I think it’s really easy to fall into that sort of viewpoint. The way most people interact with them is inherently anthropomorphic, and I think that plus the fact that AI as a concept is almost as memed as flying cars in various media makes it really hard not to end up relating that way.
I have a technical background and understand LLMs enough to know that’s bad, but I also used it like LCARS when it was new and thought it was effing amazing for a time. It’s super easy to fall under that spell, IMO.

You just run the output back through and ask it to fact check for you. Problem solved!

I kinda like to think cats would have this sort of attitude though:
octopus_ink@slrpnk.netto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If we could communicate with animals, how would we fuck it up?English191·1 day agoIn the US, we’d use it only to further exploit animals and further enrich the 1%.
Corporate America will immediately determine and then monetize all their needs. In a generation we’ll have cats paying for enough mice to get them through the week with the last of their earnings from the previous 2 weeks of catching hundreds of mice for their employers.
Then there will be a Republican-led effort to get people to stop spaying and neutering them, so the 1% will always be assured there are enough hungry cats to keep the folks at the top wealthy.
Edit: Sounds fucking ridiculous that anyone would voluntarily create or work within such a system doesn’t it?

He can literally do whatever he wants because the folks standing by him at this point would suck off the devil himself if they could be sure Dems stayed out of power, women stay barefoot and pregnant, and minorities and queer folk would get hurt along the way. The folks who want him gone are quite clearly not capable of doing anything that will get him out of power anyhow.
The best thing we can all do right now is send McDonald’s gift cards to the white house and keep cheering on Team Arteriosclerosis.

GOP will want a statue of her in front of the Capitol.
I can see it now, the ultimate maga monument - Ashli Babbit 69’ing with Kyle Rittenhouse while Derek Chauvin kneels on the neck of a faceless black man next to them, jerking himself off. Behind him will be a banner bearing this quote from David Grossman: “They all say, ‘The best sex I’ve had in months.’”
And all captured in lifelike bronze…
octopus_ink@slrpnk.netOPtoMicroblog Memes@lemmy.world•A few weeks early but no one's complainingEnglish4·3 days agoBut if the statue was moved and placed into context with possibly some insight or summary or story behind the object, then it can become a learning tool.
I already know you are arguing disingenuously, but the context of the statues is hate. They were mostly erected LONG after the civil war to ensure black folks “knew their place” and to bolster Jim Crow.
All your crowing about “no war but class war” would go down a lot easier if not for your DeSantis-style insistence that we have to pretend all this shit didn’t happen in order to do anything about the shit that IS happening. You are making maga talking points but dressing it up in “it’s all a class war sheeple!”

I’m just saying we don’t want to become extremist only for the other side to entrench themselves and have an existential fear.
Oh, well, we wouldn’t want Republican voters to show us just how awful they can really be, would we? They might elect a despot who will run the country into the ground, dismantle our infrastructure, and run roughshod over the rights of US Citizens.
Further, anyone who sees the OP reaction to the burning of a plantation and feels their “side” has been aggrieved by that reaction is accidentally telling the truth about what “their side” actually stands for.
