Why does this sounds like a bad thing. I never had PS so I missed a lot of his earlier stuff but death stranding was phenomenal; as was phantoms. Sure the strong narrative elements, actor mocap and music feels very cinematic but there’s still a lot of innovative gameplay around it. Feel like is a positive quality; not one that he has to state isn’t his intention.

It seems to me that the game was laughed at on release (the whole walking delivery simulator thing), and it needed time to be praised for its innovations by people, it’s really weird and I don’t have a good enough memory to remember similar change in public opinion for other games

Nah that’s a great point and you’re right. I think some minor gameplay element had to be tweaked (like auto stacking containers optimally I think). Dunkeys first video was taking the piss out of it but quickly after released a video praising it.

His games are certainly cinematic, and as game directors go he’s certainly an auteur. I’m still not sure why he felt the need to clarify.

MGS4 kind of jumped the shark with cutscene length. That said, I still liked it.

Or Quantum Break which intersperses gameplay with ~30 min live action cut scenes. I kind of liked it. It was like a nice little break after an intense segment.
