While I agree with your sentiment, the problem with the Bible is that it doesn’t contain democracy. It only really has examples of god ordained despots. So one can “follow the Bible” and have results that are wack.

Israel was supposed to still be loyal to King David even though he was a liar, murderer and adulterer. Jesus has the opportunity to tell people to reject Caesar but instead choose to more or less tell them to let Caesar be Caesar and keep whatever is God’s separate. It was tacit acknowledgment that sometimes you have to obey evil rulers. (St Paul carries this on in Romans)

So obviously that was necessary in first century Judea. The problem is that’s the only scenario the new testament deals with.

Add to that that all Jesus’ ethics are person based, without a single word of what a government should or shouldn’t do. Minus all the common sense tradition amalgamated in Europe over 1600 years, and you have the religious right of America.

That part of the Old Testament still applies somehow because reasons.

Since I was quite young at the millennium, but old enough to totally remember it, they’ll come a day (hopefully) when I’m one of the few very old people in the world who “remembers the 20th century”. Am seriously considering founding a not-for-profit to provide an ad free / spam free / bot free basic community. Would cost a dollar or two a month. Chief differences to the lemmy would be one account per person via proof of identity signup (I think this would improve behaviour and discourage spam), a single authority to tackle voting abuse and other things useful to be not federated.

Aside from that revenue would cover technical staff costs + hosting and the rest could go to some good cause. There’s be no ads. No data selling. Not conflict of interest over how the platform evolves. Would be open source. Adults only.

Id keep it as basic as possible to try and capture the spirit of 90s fora. Am not even sure I’d allow inline images or vid.

I think the bad and good reasons can be true at the same time. Plenty of others list the bad reasons. For the good reasons:

• it is unlikely Hamas could evacuate its weaponry, rocket stockpiles and other supplies in 24 hours undetected
• so some will be flushed out at which point they can be engaged
• others will remain, so having the civilian population leave - even if not completely - it’s the best way to reduce collateral deaths and give Hamas as little time to prepare as possible
• hostages area likely being held in the north, hence the time pressure to separate as many civilians as possible and isolate Hamas
• the crisis would be less of a crisis of the Arab nations actually stepped up to help but none of them want anything to do with Gaza Palestinians…
• finally (up to you if this is a good or bad reason) Israel may well intend to bulldoze every building in North Gaza to deny its use to Hamas and it’s obviously safer for the population to not be there when it happens. This may increase the chances of the UN / Egypt creating a viable refugee camp inside the Egyptian border which may well be Israel’s end game

Fwiw the video that Hamas themselves released shows an explosion that is very much not a missile or artillery. It has a large orange flameball, doesn’t leave a crater, leaves windows on the vans intact.

This was most likely a propane IED of which Hamas are known to use. Or a tragic accident (trucks propane tank exploding).
