  • The term tankie has been vulgarized, but it has a specific meaning. A tankie is an orthodox communist who puts the “dictatorship of proletariat” above any morality or any other interest, foreign or domestic. That’s how a tankie brushes away any genocide, any crime, because no value or entity is too important to stand in the way of their communist utopia, even human rights. In this sense, this group is very close in practice to nazis, you just have to replace “proletariat” with “nation” and for that abstraction anything is allowed: internal repression, invading your neighbours and allies.

But not all “communists”/socialists are like that and many mean well (e.g. Gorbachev, some anarchists like Chomsky or “democratic-communist” Lula, etc), but a good few follow tankies unquestioningly without realising the underlying inhumanity dressed as theory.

  • Eh, but you have examples of long-term problems created by each president: you had Clinton’s half-baked Eastern European legacy, Bush II’s middle east legacy that lasted a while, Trump’s completely polarised political landscape. I’m not sure what Obama’s main fuckup was, but there were many small neglects (maybe the main one was how he handled the 2008 crisis that Bush II left him)…the more influence you have as a country and as a person, the more shit falls on your plate to deal with :/

  • Xi vented his frustration, pointing fingers at his three predecessors – Deng Xiaoping, Jiang and Hu.

“All the issues that were left by the previous three leaders are on my shoulders” he is believed to have said. “I’ve spent the last decade tackling them but they remain unresolved. Am I to blame?”

So Deng left the one-child policy, Jiang left financialization/inequality and Hu left the housing bubble?

  • US created modern russia

(and everything else that happened since 1989 that goes beyond america bad)

modern russia is an imperialist country that competes for the world resources

(it has never stopped being so and Poland+Baltics warned us and we didn’t listen)

There’s a context, but the fact is that countries should be stopped from invading (and annexing) other countries, no matter what their sob story is.

If some disturbed kid goes on a rampage on a school, first you stop the shooting, then you investigate wtf caused it to start and stop it happening again, maybe some other school kids bullied him…none of it matters once it got to the shooting part.

I could say the same for Napoleon, for Hitler, for Vietnam, hey look, here’s Chomsky on that:

    https://chomsky.info/20060109/

The United States went to war in Vietnam for a very good reason. They were afraid Vietnam would be a successful model of independent development and that would have a virus effect—infect others who might try to follow the same course. There was a very simple war aim—destroy Vietnam. And they did it.

When you take the context into account, maybe it helps understand why it’s happening, but it’s still a war crime that has to be stopped.

PS: if you think the world can withstand going back to 18th century multipolar conquest politics with nuclear weapons on the table, you don’t appreciate the miserable suffering that means for most of us. The nuclear era only allows one or 2 poles, more than that and you get an unstable solution. So russia better stop it, go back and cozy up to China, because it’s not getting its empire back if we can help it (that’s one of the few things China and the US agree on).
