AI can’t ‘train itself’, there is no training required for an optimization problem. A system that queries the value of the objective function - “how good is this solution” - then tweaks parameters according to the optimization algorithm - traffic light timings - and queries the objective function again isn’t training itself, it isn’t learning, it is centuries-old mathematics.

There’s a lot of intentional and unintentional misinformation around what “AI” is, what it can do, and what it can do that is actually novel. Beyond Generative AI - the new craze - most of what is packaged as AI are mature algorithms applied to an old problem in a stagnant field and then repackaged as a corporate press release.

Take drug discovery. No “AI” didn’t just make 50 new antibiotics, they just hired a chemist who graduated in the last decade who understands commercial retrosynthetic search tools and who asked the biopharma guy what functional groups they think would work.

“AI” isn’t needed to solve optimization problems, that’s what we have optimization algorithms for.

Define an objective and parameters and give the problem to any one of the dozens of general solvers and you’ll get approximate answers. Large cities already use models like these for traffic flow, there’s a whole field of literature on it.

The one closest to what you mentioned is a genetic algorithm, again a decades-old technique that has very little in common with Generative “AI”

From these, many people think he cheated. The vibrating butt plug is unlikely, but what is more likely is that Magnus’ prep got leaked and Hans was able to hyper-prepare for a specific line of play.

No, what I am saying is you can’t blame every bad thing about the Korean peninsula on the US. Did the US recognize the PRK? Nope, they suppressed it. Should they have recognized it? Probably.

Did the Soviets recognize the PRK? Nope, they usurped it. Should they have recognized it? Probably.

Did the existence of the PRK change the trajectory of the peninsula towards separation and civil war? No, it was hardly a speed bump to the imperial power of the USSR and US.

The PRK is an interesting historical anecdote, but it is irrelevant when discussing the Korean War.

The brief existence of the PRK has essentially no bearing on the civil war. It existed less than a year, and was dismantled in both the South and the North by the actions of the US and Soviet Union.

Neither power cared to entertain what the people of Korea wanted in the Post-War period.

No power were the ‘good guys’. None had the moral high ground. All deserve blame for what happened. The history of the period is one of tragedy and ambition.

None of that changes the fact that North Korea, backed by the Soviets and later China, started the shooting war by invading the South.

There were literal years of border skirmishes before the North invaded on the 25th of June, 1950. The Bodo League Massacre is the name for a series of purges of suspected communists that began with an order from the SK President on June 27th, 1950. Two days after the North Invaded.

The fundamental issue with declining populations - fundamental as in regardless of the economic system of the country - is decreasing standard of living.

The very simple metric is productivity-adjusted hours worked per person. This invariably falls in cases where overall population is declining, because populations age as they decline, and older people work less (retirement) than younger ones.

As this metric falls, the country’s economy basically just produces less stuff per-person than it did in the past. This makes everyone effectively poorer.

In extreme cases, there can also be issues with availability of services. E.g. healthcare: Each doctor/nurse/caregiver can only effectively attend to so many patients and this number is difficult to increase with technology.
