I couldn’t remove the thimble, I tried but the needle was locking it on my finger. I had to pull the needle out through my finger, then remove, by which time the thimble was full of blood…

Friends did, Big Bang Theory does all the time, but yeah pretty much every yank comedy contains some negativity towards Indian food. I don’t watch much comedy, but it seems to be a meme in their shows.

The yanks insist it is short for gasolene, but it is actually short for the name of the guy who marketed it in their country. Like saying “hoover” for vacuum cleaner or “wettex” for sponge.

It always sounds wrong to me as we have both gas (natural gas) and liquid petrol (refined oil) powered cars, as well as deisel cars. What they call gas is a liquid. But no one said language has to make sense I guess. Diesel, btw, is also a name based on a persons name…

Reddit was at the extreme end of emoji rejection as far as I ever saw. Odd that you experienced differently. I often saw well-upvoted comments such as “downvote due to emoji use” next to heavily downvoted emojis on Reddit.

Not an emoji fan myself, but each to their own.

Don’t know if you have ever visited the US, but I was not expecting what we found. Worst was the constant begging. People tapping on the windows of the car when we stopped at intersections, chasing us around shopping centres and along streets, and begging on train stations, expecting “tips” for returning a bag they had stolen out of my hand (sometimes, jetlag didn’t help me be fast enough) or “tips” for giving directions I didn’t want, need, or ask for. They constantly expected money to be handed to them.

It was shocking how the roads were broken, the shops had no electronic payment, the coins were worth practically nothing, the paper money was literally paper scrip and not holographic or durable, and the buildings were rotting apart. People were dying on the footpaths. Crowds of dirty people. Rubbish everywhere. But worst was the begging.

Oddly, Canada isn’t like that. If you ever visited the US, India is similar, but not unexpected the way the US is.

He felt we had all been sitting down for too long, and should gently pat the stranger on the butt, presumably to help them with the pins and needles. It was weird, but we thought it was weirder still! I believe people did indeed ask a lot of questions of him, but at the time it was a massive moment of lost in translation and divided by a common language, etc.

Not as weird or rude as telling them to pat their neighbour on the vulva.

An American comedian, following a long set here in Australia, told the audience to stand up and stretch. He then tried to direct us to “bend over and pat your neighbour on the fanny”. Stone cold silence did not indicate to him his mistake, and he tried several times before eventually realising he had lost his audience goodwill entirely with this starting skit.

Turned out later that he had no clue what “fanny” means here, and had to have it explained to him.
