Nobody was angry. Also, words have multiple uses. Just because it was used in Pulp Fiction in the BDSM context does not mean it doesn’t carry the ableist definition.

That is probably where they got it, but the word definitely had multiple uses at the time. It may not have been explicitly ableist, but it is and was an ableist word. It also invalidates their claim that they are trying to reclaim usage. Again, they named it that because they thought it was funny, not some grand scheme.
I think they are leaving out the part where they called it “The GIMP” in the 90s. They clearly chose the name to be edgy, and they are now trying to justify it after the fact. Complaining about the “sterilization” of language is just out of touch and leaves out the fact that if they stopped using the word, it might just completely fall out of use.
something is unethical without stating or at least implying a specific ethical philosophy.
Which is why I followed it up by saying the best we can do is harm reduction by choosing the less harmful paths when we find them. Nothing you are saying is different to what I said, just a different wording
A. Not a “dude”
B. I’ll pose the same rhetorical as I did to the other person that didn’t think popularity was support:
If you see two pieces of identical software, one with 1000 downloads and one with 100,000, which would you choose?
I’m not sure of the origin, but that is a fair point. I typically us it in the context of there is no way to find a harm free source of anything in a capitalist society, so you have to find the path with the least amount of harm in it. That is basically what you are saying, but just tweaking the stated definition of ethical.
What? It was your hypothetical
Self described tankies.
If you see two pieces of identical software, one with 1000 downloads and one with 100,000, which would you choose?
Wow, what a slippery slope you’ve made.
Adding to popularity does support them.
Sure, there is no ethical consumerism under capitalism. But I can do harm reduction. When someone says or does something shitty, I can avoid or stop using their product. In your example, if a road worker came out publically with some transphobic nonsense, I could raise that to my local road authority and they would likely lose their job. Are there more people that have shitty views in this theoretical? Maybe, but they will be less likely to spew them if they know there are consequences.
Oh nice. Hadn’t heard a platform had been decided upon.
“What about the good things Hitler did?” Is not the flex you think it is. Also, using the Autobahn does not send support to Nazis
Good news, most folks at beehaw know and the admins have decided to move to a new platform
That’s fair. I guess I give just a little bit of room for fucking up and fixing it. I am also not particularly loyal and will ditch companies at the drop of a hat.
Is that still true? The article/github thread cited on Prism Break are from 2012 and 2013 respectively. It seems only to be true of Ubuntu 12.10. The only thing I can from from current Ubuntu versions is the ad in the command line when doing an apt upgrade, and that is from 2022. It does not appear to exist in other Ubuntu based distros since it is an ad for Ubuntu Pro. Not saying it is great, but it seems like non-Canonical distros should be OK.
I’m on Pop_OS and really like it. I chose it because i have a 2080, so the nvidia specific package is great for me. No WiFi issues, but I almost always have it hard wired, so not much chance to have it go wrong
That is a blue light filter, so you shouldn’t need a third party filter. The science just isn’t out there to show whether or not it helps with sleep, though. It might help, but other things like not using screens within a couple hours to bed and not using phones in bed has better outcomes.
