Thanks for the additional info. Sorry - that article I posted was not very well researched - I should have looked for something better, but was just making a point that inequity is still a big problem in a “prosperous” Mexico.
I appreciate you also confirming that working conditions in maquiladoras are accountable to some decent standards, and that they provide additional benefits - overtime pay rates being one of them, which is encouraging to hear - I wonder if that was due to labor unions or not.
Clearly, they are better places to work than many other local options. So for sure, not everything about maquiladoras is negative - and they are certainly not the root cause of disparity in North America. Thanks again for correcting the perception I might have given with that article.
It was nice while it lasted. Moved to MX.
“Despite working long hours doing many times strenuous and dangerous work, maquila workers earn only 50 cents to 1 dollar per hour.”
We need a new deal - a sauna in every boat.
Sauna boats sound much more innovative than “full self-driving”.
great - I’d be interested to hear if this works for you.
had issues with Remmima and Win 10 last week - worked around it by using xfreerdp directly at the command line. this is what I use from a linux command line to set the resolution and sound (audio-mode:1 is same as Remmima local sound, or supposed to be)
xfreerdp /w:1680 /h:1050 /u: /audio-mode:1 /v: /sound /microphone
this keeps all audio local on the system, which is what I need.
Remmima was working fine until I messed with the settings to see if I could have both local and remote audio with RDP (you can’t) and then I could not get the local audio back no matter what I did - tried deleting profile, reinstalling, etc. Nothing worked until invoking xfreerdp directly. Been flawless since then.
What’s next?
A gigantic Lemmy instance?
thanks… gotta love wikipedia…
“The song reached No. 20 in the UK Singles Chart, and No. 1 in the UK Independent Singles Chart and UK Singles Sales Chart. The song is a follow-up to the band’s previous tracks “Boris Johnson Is a Fucking Cunt” from 2020, and “Boris Johnson Is Still a Fucking Cunt” from 2021.”
Facebook again.
They are chanting against the IMF… why?, I thought…
oh…
BUENOS AIRES, Dec 9 (Reuters) - A U.S. delegation gave its support to Argentine President-elect Javier Milei over talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and developing its lithium sector during a meeting in Buenos Aires on Saturday, a White House official told Reuters.
Juan Gonzalez, adviser to U.S. President Joe Biden and the National Security Council’s Western Hemisphere senior director, said the talks, a day ahead of Milei’s inauguration, were “very positive” and focused on the country’s embattled economy.
Ah yes! a moment of clarity. Carry on, then. As usual.
JFC the article is practically just a list of referenced sources - congrats on your block.

now this one’s pardoned, who will the Murdochs be nominating for the “Australia’s most hated woman” title?
Neither would I - you can browse Lemmy (and mastodon I think) pretty extensively without logging in. I also think we are at the start of a long term transition towards decentralization of media generally.
In terms of content I like Lemmy. I do see how concentrated the user base is - but I don’t see it getting smaller - if anything I see it growing slowly but surely. In addition to organic growth, there will probably be events that drive massive migration to the fediverse - like reddit’s nonsense but from different or more diverse sources - some media attention or a major celebrity plug and things could get crazy pretty fast. The platform will probably need a lot of extra TLC to scale rapidly if that happens.
When you see the major media companies start to stand up Mastodon instances - which I also think is going to happen eventually - expansion of the fediverse seems all but inevitable. I would be interested to see what that chart looks like in 5, 10 years. There are plenty of ways for the fediverse to grow apart from more lemmy users signing up.
