I knew their update policy was bad, didn’t knew it was this bad.
Mobvoi’s alternatives always boasted of much longer battery life than Pixel or Galaxy counterparts. The author moans about lack of Google Assistant support and wireless charging but honestly, significantly larger battery life is more than worth any Assistant.
Also, wireless charging might be more convenient but it generates a lot of wasted heat and my Galaxy Watch throttles when charging via WPC mechanism in high temperatures.
One valid criticism is the slow rate of upgrades that this company gives and it’s lesser international availability.
Stock android experience is the exception, not the norm, sadly. Some manufactures like Motorola or HMD have a light touch and close to stock but other ones don’t. The worst offenders are Chinese brands who twist it so much and without much benefit(Atleast, Samsung’s ONE UI is customizable as heck, can’t say the same for Realme’s).
I think the article mentions it. AOL tried to block it and this to and fro went 21 times before finally coming to a stop. MSN and Yahoo later signed a deal, I think, so that the former will work with latter’s contacts properly.
Err, this payment doesn’t block ads. It only switches off personalised ads. So, the user is still seeing ads, just not targeted ones. So the site is getting both user’s money plus ad money. And technically, I am not sure how privacy preserving this is because you will still need to create an account which technically leaves you vulnerable to tracking.
My first smartphone was their cheap Lumia 520. Yes, it had its limitations (it couldn’t natively playback mkv files and no VLC support was there yet; only one paid app offered this basic thing) but the polycarbonate back was good, the battery lived decent enough despite being small and the OS was very smooth.
Hardly any proper compact phones are released now. Even Asus has switched to larger sized models with its newer Zenfone series.

Upto 6000mAh battery is common. Some Oneplus phones have upto 5500 mAh, Samsung budget series have an option upto 6000mAh. And of course, Chinese OEMs do offer tons of phones in that range.
Now, what is interesting is that phones above 6000mAh are rare. Whilst there is the occasional power bank attached phone that weighs half a kilo and has five digits battery life; the most I have seen is a Techno phone going upto 7000mAh.
I have YouTube Premium though not the Family variant and Google won’t just fix their app. It is way behind NewPipe or YouTube ReVanced. No, I don’t need shorts. No I don’t need constant nudges to join groups of YouTubers by paying after I just paid you money, Google!
What I want is system wide quality setting (what exactly does High or Data Saver mean; would it kill you to give 480p, 720p or 1080p as options) or Sponserblock integration (okay, this thing is probably never gonna happen but still). YouTube 's app is a stinking pile of shit. I just use YouTube Music from them and will cancel/not renew my plan after it lapses.
Whole set of panels from the author here. These are very old stuff (take a look at the Politics section, it is filled with references to 60s and 70s era US; therefore I guess this too was made much before).
I’ll find a Sun article for this :p.
Yes, Amarok is also active again though it’s UI is reasonably different from Clementine now.
I used it in the past on Linux and liked it’s relatively small memory footprint though I am currently on Strawberry ( a fork of Clementine).
Yes, 4 out of top 5 slots in India (in terms of market share) are taken by Chinese OEMs (other being Samsung). However, not all are equally unknown. Brands like Xiaomi have released international phones as well and are regularly reviewed by Western publications. Techno, meanwhile, is slightly more focused on emerging countries and is out of depth in developed economies.
They aren’t necessarily US specific. Wages not keeping up with inflation and rising cost of living is a factor from South Korea to Japan to Singapore as well. Some countries muck it up themselves like China with their one child policy back in the day (even the Chinese fertility rate has dipped below 2.2, I think).
Wear OS is pitiable. My previous GW 4 40mm had 247 mAh battery and barely lasted a day with AOD on. Plus the charging was so slow. Even with Samsung’s latest Galaxy Watch Ultra, it has lesser endurance that what Tizen based Frontier had.
