Canadian-American software developer living in Japan since 2015. Into gardening, DIY, permaculture, etc.
I went to Europe in the summer of '99. I still had to get my bank to get me all of the currencies for those countries prior to going and don’t recall having seen Euros at all at that point.
In Japan, you can be on the hook (sued) for knowingly engaging in a relationship with someone you know to be married. It’s usually about breaking up the marriage, from what I understand. Sex of the people involved doesn’t matter here.
Japan does not grant citizenship to those born here. There are multiple ways to acquire Japanese citizenship, most of which are based on the most recent couple generations of parents/grandparents. Multiple citizenship technically isn’t allowed, either. Anyone naturalizing to Japanese citizenship must relinquish their existing citizenship(s) unless the other country does not allow relinquishing. If found out, the Japanese government can take action to revoke citizenship (or at least parts of it; there are actually court cases about this).
I’m shocked that this is still news as often as he seems to speak without thinking
For the Koreans I met who moved to Japan, the work culture can be less bad, as can be working at certain companies despite where they graduated from. My sample size is small, though, and I am neither Japanese nor Korean.
Yep. 裸祭り -> hadaka matsuri -> naked festival
shriners?
神主 (kannushi) is apparently the term for the head priest. Not sure who made the decision, though.
Japan allows women (…)
A shrine in Japan which is legally distinct from the Japanese government (especially post-WWII)
They’re dentists’ drills; the sound alone is horrifying! (I have nothing useful to add)
That would be some shit if Japan stopped being rabies free because of human bites.
Ash levels matter; ash and engines really don’t mix well.
I actually got board, got a new HDD, and got linux mint on it. It doesn’t seem to have a bootloader installed and trying to install grub2 hasn’t changed anything. I’m also pretty disappointed in game support. Maybe I’m missing something, but Steam knows it’s on linux and a huge number of games in my library just say they run on windows or windows and mac.
I’ll check it out. Thanks!
One of my goals after moving is to get another HDD and dual-boot as I transition away. I mostly have to figure out gaming and video editing stuff. I will also probably run WINE just for notepad++ because I can’t quit it with the textfx tools (so far as I know, the linux clone was abandoned, sadly).
JAXA hasn’t stopped inflation and wage stagnation yet! What’s wrong with them?!
Absolutely not. They type, amount, and location of material would not cause this.
There’s this read to go through https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_war_apology_statements_issued_by_Japan with the relevant bit being
Both stated that this agreement will "finally and irreversibly" resolve the contentious issue and that "on the premise that the Government of Japan will steadily implement the measures it announced", both countries "will refrain from accusing or criticizing each other regarding this issue in the international community, including at the United Nations".[56]
I think it will be better when the geezer ultra-nationalists finally die out, but there are of course younger ones as well that they raised.
On the other hand, this kinda goes against the “finally and irreversibly resolve” bit.
There’s also the political theatre aspect. Korea likes to rile up the ultra-nationalist left as Japan does with their right for domestic political points.
Ah, yeah; that’d explain it. I am kinda glad I got to see all the different countries’ notes and coins. It was a bit of a pain-in-the-ass, though, when a Swiss ATM decided my US ATM card looked delicious. Last leg of the trip was pretty rough without the ability to get cash.
