It’s crazy to me that Disney isn’t using the Muppets more actively.

I love the Muppets. I wish Disney used them more.

I wonder if they have any idea how to translate what made the Muppets so special in their time to a modern day. There is a zaniness and levity to them that most struggle with, combines with a grounded cultural commentary. It’s satire, parody, and hopeful comedy mixed together; and it’s super tricky.

Muppets Mayhem is a good start, but I really wish they’d make human actors less campy at the same time. Jason Segal got this part right.

The muppets don’t sell to children anymore. That’s why. There is also no longer a lot of money in properties that are multi-layered in their entertainment approach. It’s much easier to produced lots of specialized content. Muppets are essentially a period piece of the 70s/80s and even in the last movie it was more of a nostalgia for adults than anything else.

Kids today grow up today entirely on CGI movies/tv shows. I have four newphews who mostly live on youtube. They like Star wars and Marvel. That’s about it. They have never little interest in anything else. I showed them one or two muppets movie and they thought it was ‘stupid and boring’.
